Marinara Meat Sauce

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 medium onion, diced

  • 3-4 cloves of garlic, minced

  • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey

  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste, depending on the salt level of the canned tomato products

  • 1 28-ounce can crushed peeled tomatoes

  • 1 28-ounce can tomato puree

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 tablespoon Italian mixed seasonings, or to taste

Directions

  • Heat the oil over medium heat until shimmering. Add the onions, and cook until the start to soften, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant and starting to brown, about 1-2 minutes more.
  • Add the ground meat. Cook until browned through, constantly breaking into smaller pieces with a wooden spoon or spatula. Add the salt when the pieces are smaller but the meat is not completely cooked through. Work the salt into the meat as you break the pieces up.
  • Add the canned tomatoes and tomato puree. Use the water to rinse out the tomato cans and add the water. Add the seasoning and mix well.
  • Reduce heat to low, cover, and gently simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally so that the sauce does not burn on the bottom. If the sauce is too thin, crack the lid off the top to allow some steam to escape while also not allowing the tomato sauce to spit everywhere.

Serve with cooked pasta of your choice. Pairs well with Alfredo sauce and bread sticks.
